Old news

I have been remiss in not blogging about the fact that Yen Press announced their new BL license at NYCC: The Crescent Moon Story by Hyouta Fujiyama! And I’ll be lettering it, yay. That will bring me back to my roots, as the first manga I ever lettered was also by Fujiyama-sensei. It seems like a cute story and I like her artwork, so I’m looking forward to working on it.

In other old(ish) news, Higurashi 2 is out. Ah, that series is so insane. My favorite pages are 204-205, naturally. 😛 (And why are the volumes so long? Just wait until volume 2 of the Cotton Drifting Arc – 274 pages! Of CRAZY. It’s pretty awesome.)

Coming out* next: Mr. Flower Bride, Yen’s second BL title. Yes, with Crescent Moon Story I’ll have lettered 3 of their 4 BL titles so far (I tried to fight Tania for Love Quest, too, but what kind of chance did I have against someone in-house? Sigh! 😉 ).

*Heh. (Sorry.)

His Arrogance is out (yes, I finally noticed)

Yay! Amazon says it’s still a preorder, but it’s in stock at Akadot Retail.

(Cover photo tk. Flickr and Yahoo being spectacularly irritating as usual this morning.)

I should try to update this more than once a month….

Things that have happened since my last update:

  • The trade volume of Higurashi 1 was released! Check out the 4-page color insert toward the end. Glad that made it back in. 🙂
  • Broccoli USA is shutting down. 😦 This is very sad; not only did they produce some excellent books (and – to be selfish for a moment – I was looking forward to Cigarette Kisses), but I really liked the couple of people I met who worked there. I hope they are doing okay!
  • I finished Higurashi 3 and Mr. Flower Groom. Whew. Volumes 3 and 4 of Higurashi are a real pain to clean (lots of text over art/tone), but I think (hope) my cleaning is improving. I am pretty pleased with volume 4 especially (so far!). By the way, both these volumes will be printed from the original Japanese files (rather than scanned books), so the quality in general will be better and less art will be trimmed off.
  • I got a page in the Anime News Network database. Hee! (Yes, I updated it myself, but it’s still missing some things; oddly, The Devil’s Secret is not in their database at all!)

Hey, is there anything anyone would like to know about lettering? I think I have a grand total of 2 readers and one of you knows more about manga production than I do, but if you guys have any requests just let me know…. 😉

Falling Into Love at Akadot Retail

Hm, looks like you can get your hands on the advance copies of Falling Into Love at Akadot Retail. They did indeed have advances at Yaoi-Con last weekend and I picked up a copy myself. Glad to see their choice of title font and mine echo each other – guess I shouldn’t have worried about going a bit script-y. 🙂 Honestly, the main story in this one is cute, but the companion volume – His Arrogance, which is about Tomohito’s younger brother (it’s set a few years after Falling Into Love) – is even cuter. I personally liked His Arrogance better overall. 🙂 It’s slated to be out in December, but DMP did say some things are running behind (and like many companies they’re having to cut back a bit in the current economic climate) so I’m not sure if it will be out on time. I just turned in corrections, so hopefully it won’t be too long!

Speaking of cute books, picked up a bunch at Yaoi-Con. Just finished Mister Mistress by Rize Shinba (hilarious!) and I finally read Moon and Sandals by Fumi Yoshinaga (masterful, as usual!). But what I’m most looking forward to is Saika Kunieda’s Future Lovers (and of course I can’t wait for the sequel coming out in 2009!).

Speaking of Deux Press titles (Mister Mistress and Future Lovers), as far as I know they’re the only publisher that subtitles asides rather than replacing them. Someone in their panel asked them why they’d made the decision to handle them that way and the response was that they didn’t want to alter the art (asides are hand-written), and also that people who can read a bit of Japanese like to see the original text right there. The person asking the question clearly wished they would just replace it (I think she thought it was too messy). I can see her point (it does look a bit crowded sometimes), but I respect Deux for wanting to preserve the original art as much as possible. Something to think about….

Falling Into Love released (?)

Amazon has it still listed as a pre-order, but I hear there will be copies at Yaoi-Con this weekend. (I’ll be there, too!)
